As if the giant blue-colored screen used in prior versions of Windows wasn't enough to let you know your computer crashed, apparently Microsoft has decided that in Vista they need to let you know that your computer blue-screened once it comes back up as well.
While, normally I would think that additional information about a crash was useful (I mean, many power users know that nv4_disp.dll is a video card problem, but a quick search on Google can help troubleshoot most of the info that you get on a blue screen), this particular message tells you absolutely nothing useful about the crash. Perhaps the developer who created the dialog could help, but your average Joe is going to be completely lost.
I mean, seriously, if you were going to provide more information about a crash, wouldn't you have thought that a good place to start would have been, at a minimum, with the info that was on the blue screen that flashed up on the monitor?
EDIT: Please don't curse or post gobs of debug info in the comments. If the crashes seem to be random then it's probably failing memory or a bad power supply. Beyond that, all I can say is to start searching Google. If you're using an OEM system (Dell, HP, etc.) then you may also be able to contact your manufacturer for support. This is not a support site for Windows Vista so do not post here asking for help.

Well, to start you'll probably want to read through those three files to see if the crash was blamed on something specific, like "nv4_disp.dll". If so, Google whatever the module was and see if you get any hits. If this was a one-time event and the crash was seemingly random (no heavy load at the time, program was already running, etc.) then it could be bad RAM or perhaps the system overheating.
Really though, the point of my post was that the dialog simply doesn't provide enough information to diagnose the problem.

This post really wasn't about help, simply that Microsoft actually added a "feature" to tell you that your computer blue screened once it comes back up.
In order to "fix" the issue you should make sure that you've got the newest drivers for your hardware and then either start searching with Google (try searching on the DLL that flaked out, you might have to look at the dump files that were created) or try contacting the system manufacturer if this is an OEM system. Of course, both of those assume that your issue is recurring and not an isolated incident.

I totally agree, what complete and utter CRAP.
My blue screen problem has occurred 3 times since I have been using Vista and whilst some genious out there thought it might be useful to have the PC restart automatically upon a BSOD, the least they can do is provide us with the specific component causing the problem in their Vista dialog screen. On only one occasion have I managed to catch the BSOD as it happened and I noticed it said something related to 'IRQ not less than or equal' but before I could note it down, it had gone.

I've had it happen 4 times now. The three files it gives are:
Version.txt - Just the windows version info
sysdata.xml - XML file of all your system devices and drivers
mini[date].dmp - this isn't readable by humans
There is zero help, even if you dig. This is super lame.

Recently ive been gettin a blue screen error reporting this but only wen i reboot my system.
It first occured after installing my new Logitech G11 keybord and MX400 mouse, other than that nothing has changed on my system. If im honest the information provided by vista goes straight over my head so any help would be greatly appricated, thanx.

Sorry, but as the rant said, the info provided isn't really sufficient to determine the cause. In your situation, if the problem started with the installation of those two devices then one of them, or more likely the software that came with them, is the cause. Try uninstalling one and see if the problem goes away.
Same problem, different additional info. Happened when I attempted to connect my dual screen. It does not let my computer shut down, it keeps rebooting. It is a right pain in the you know what!!

i had this prob when i used vista home and i'm still experiencing the same prob now that i'm using vista ultimate...
I am getting the very same messages that Tina is getting. I purchased an HP Pavillion (AMD 64X dual core 5200+2.6GHz with 2942 MB of RAM) one week ago and it has crashed numerous times for no particular reason. I can be surfing or doing nothing and the system crashes. I have done all of the hardware diagnostics I can on this computer with no indications of mis-functioning hardware or applications. I have spent 3 hours on the telephone with HP support and they have no suggestions. The error message is always about hardware being the cause of the problem. My previous computer had Vista and I never received this message. I know we all hate Vista but I guess we must live with it. I just would like a solution as returning this machine and going through all of the trouble to set it up is not something I want to do. I see that there are free downloads out there for blue screen problems but are they safe? Further they seem to be for XP. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Assuming you've got UAC turned on and are not running every app as an Administrator, blue screen crashes are generally the result of poorly-written device drivers or faulty hardware.
If you are using the recommended drivers from your hardware manufacturer then try running memtest86+ to see if you've got bad RAM. Let it run for at least 24 hours (48 would be better) or until you get a hit. If that doesn't turn something up then try running a burn-in app to stress your system as it could be heat related.
I have had this problem everytime i log on, so what ive just done is found the 3 files it said i might have a problem with, i found it easier to search them in expolrer and i deleted them...dont no if its worked yet as ive just done it but if it has i'll be sure to let you all no, it clearly says the problem is in either of these so maybe you should delete them...im now going to scan my laptop with norton and giv it a good spring clean,lol.
i hope it solves the problem for me and all of you as its very worrying when these things happen.

i reinstaled my vista and now it doesn`t appear any bluescreen anymore . that`s the only solution ... to reinstall windows vista. good luck on this!
ARHHHHH, im cracking up, i deleted those files as i explaind ealier and now an error message comes up saying "error when write data to registry" im going mad...what is this and how can i quickley solve it, i no nothing techinical about computers so please explain it simple....thanx....

You can't just go deleting files that cause your machine to crash as they might be needed. Given the message you reported that you're now receiving I'd say that your best bet is to backup your files and reinstall Windows.

This blog is awful and doesn't help the thousands crashing daily. From overheating to Bad Ram to poor Security programs why doesn't every hack on here admit they have no clue what it is and we all have to just wait until a service pack upgrade is available from Microsoft to fix it... Another frustrated blue screener!

You're an idiot. This site has very little to do with Windows and I'm fairly certain that this is the ONLY post thus far where I've mentioned "Vista". In fact, the last sentence of the original post says that you should not post here looking for help as this is not a support site. This post was made (9 months ago) to vent my own frustration with the dumbed-down error reporting present in Windows Vista, not to offer assistance to others with their Vista problems.
By the way, what does Windows Vista have to do with your machine having bad memory and overheating issues? If you think that SP1 will help you with those problems then you're going to be disappointed as the only thing that will fix bad memory is new memory and the only way to fix cooling issues is with more fans moving air through your case or fewer devices inside generating heat. If you're complaining about an OEM machine you purchased then I would suggest contacting your system builder.

as for my problems, i took it to a reapair shop and had VISTA re-installed and they also recommended i gert rid of NORTON as they said it doesnt do anything to help my computer so they installed a version of there own..my computer is as new again, all for £60.. wellworth it, in future i will not take advise from people and just go to a proper repair shop where people no what there doing....

hi! i posted my prob last jan 19 and noe my prob has been solved. i reinstalled my vista and i only uploaded programs that are vista compatible... be careful of what you install in your computer. if it is not compatible with vista, it will experience bluescreen. thank you! this site is very useful.

Admittedly I found this site from Googling the problem my Mum's having with Blue Screen on her new HP Pavilion running Vista, and have read every comment for advice - but I just want to back up Jason and say I understand this is not a support site!!
It's soooo rude of people to come on here ranting about how rubbish the site is and others saying they'll take it to get repaired by "people who know what they're talking about"!! Oh my goodness! Even if this was a support site, it would only be kind hearted people giving over their own time to help - so others reading it have no right to slate the contributors!
How naive to think your computer has a problem and a) deleting files will fix it and not cause other problems, and b) if a quick comment left in a discussion about a useless Vista Window doesn't solve your problem the person who wrote it is useless!
Anyway, sorry - I've ranted on now, but I wanted to back up Jason and assure him SOME people actually read his original post, lol! Meanwhile, I've got to wait for this one to crash again so I can try and catch what flashes up on the Blue Screen!
Yeah ive been experiencing the same problem however I havent installed any new hardware, as a matter of fact the only hardware attached to the pc is the factory installed items and they have been there since december only recently has the computer been starting to crash and does it about every five to ten minutes. I have recently installed CA so maybe that could be the problem.
When this happened to my computer, it was because my brother spilled root beer on the table, and after it dried it worked :D!

i fixed my vista blue screen error repairing from Vista CD. I don't like vista. Win Xp works well for me.
